Lately I’ve noticed that some of my craftiest customers have been hand-painting white paper party lanterns to give them a custom look, which I think is such a brilliant idea! (The photo above is from August’s sock monkey party, and you can also spot hand-painted lanterns in James’ train party.) I love paper party lanterns for party decor because they have so much impact for being so budget-friendly, and because customizing them with your own DIY touches is so easy. Check out these other fantastic ideas…

This has been my favorite paper lantern upgrade idea for ages. The idea and tutorial is by You had me at bonjour. The mini bunting is so sweet and festive, and you could incorporate it into your party decor in tons of other ways, too! {full tutorial here}

Naturally, Martha Stewart’s paper lanterns covered in tissue circles are absolutely gorgeous…

…though the rainbow version by June & Bear is even better.

Glitter. YES. It will be a mess, and you will find glitter in every last corner of the house, but it will be so worth it! Get the tutorial at Oh Happy Day.

This rainbow lantern by The Swell Life is made using tissue paper squares, which gives it a really modern and funky feel. And again, you’ve gotta love the rainbow!

And last but certainly not least, these gorgeous lanterns by Crafty Nest take humble faux flowers and pom-pom fringe and turn them into something worthy of being on display year-round.
