Have you ever made marshmallows from scratch? I love the grab-‘n-go bagged marshmallows as much as the next girl, but you have to admit – homemade marshmallows taste so much better than store-bought ones! Plus, if you make them yourself, you can cut them into custom shapes, like these beautiful heart shaped marshmallows. Wouldn’t these be irresistible for a little girl’s birthday party, or for Valentine’s Day?

• If you work in grams, here’s Tanya’s recipe that she used to make the marshmallows shown in the photo.

• If you work in cups, here’s a popular recipe by Alton Brown.

To make the marshmallows pink instead of white, just add a bit of food coloring. Pour the marshmallow “batter” into a shallow pan lined with parchment paper, then use a cookie cutter dusted with powdered sugar to cut out the hearts, or any other shape of your choice. (Simple shapes work best.)

PS. One more hot tip from Tanya – this idea will work equally well with ice cream! Allow a tub of ice cream to soften, then pour it into a shallow pan lined with plastic wrap rather than paper. Re-freeze, then cut out the shapes.
