Have you ever made marshmallows from scratch? I love the grab-‘n-go bagged marshmallows as much as the next girl, but you have to admit – homemade marshmallows taste so much better than store-bought ones! Plus, if you make them yourself, you can cut them into custom shapes, like these beautiful heart shaped marshmallows. Wouldn’t these be irresistible for a little girl’s birthday party, or for Valentine’s Day?

These marshmallows (and the beautiful photo of them) are by Tanya of Decorada {Biscuits & Cakes for Special Occasions}. To get started making your own marshmallows, check out one of these recipes:

• If you work in grams, here’s Tanya’s recipe that she used to make the marshmallows shown in the photo.

• If you work in cups, here’s a popular recipe by Alton Brown.

To make the marshmallows pink instead of white, just add a bit of food coloring. Pour the marshmallow “batter” into a shallow pan lined with parchment paper, then use a cookie cutter dusted with powdered sugar to cut out the hearts, or any other shape of your choice. (Simple shapes work best.)

PS. One more hot tip from Tanya – this idea will work equally well with ice cream! Allow a tub of ice cream to soften, then pour it into a shallow pan lined with plastic wrap rather than paper. Re-freeze, then cut out the shapes.

      Hi Lara! Here are two different recipes you could try. If you are more comfortable measuring in cups you can use Alton's recipe. If you prefer grams you can use Tanya's recipe. : )
